Am I Toxic? Let’s Get Real for a Minute

We hear the term “toxic people” all the time — the manipulators, the energy-drainers, the ones who tear others down. But here’s a tough question: have you ever asked yourself, wait… am I toxic? It’s not an easy thought to sit with, but self-awareness starts there.

Here’s the thing: being toxic doesn’t always come from being mean or cruel. A lot of the time, it comes from insecurity, stress, or old wounds we haven’t dealt with. Think about it — do you often criticise people, take over conversations, or find it hard to say “sorry”? Do your friends or family seem kind of distant or guarded around you? Those could be signs that your behaviour is having a negative impact.

But here’s some good news: being toxic doesn’t make you a “bad” person. It just means you’ve got some patterns that might need attention. Maybe you snap when you feel hurt. Maybe you brush off people’s feelings without noticing. Recognising these things is actually the first step toward shifting them.

Ask yourself: Do I make others feel small just so I can feel big? Do I hold onto grudges? Do I always need to be right? If you said “yes” — even a little — guess what? You’re human. We all have toxic tendencies sometimes. The real question is: are you willing to notice them and work on them?

Growth comes from owning up. That could mean apologising when you mess up, checking in with trusted friends, journaling, or even talking to a therapist. You’re not defined by your worst moments — you’re defined by how you handle them afterwards.

Honestly, the fact that you’re even asking yourself, “Am I toxic?” already shows you care. And that’s where real change begins.
